The furnace’s air filtering system can eliminate airborne dust and improve indoor air quality. The sealed combustion in high efficiency models also protects indoor air quality by isolating the burner and flue from the home.

A forced-air central heating system powered by a natural gas furnace uses duct-work and vents to distribute warm air throughout the house. The primary components of the system include: an air filter, blower, heat exchanger / element / coil, and various controls. A thermostat is used to control temperature in the house.

ENERGY STAR® furnaces deliver 90 to 97 per cent of the heat they produce into your home. ENERGY STAR® boilers provide at least 85 per cent efficiency. ENERGY STAR® furnaces and boilers are ideal in a well-sealed energy efficient home. They can perform at their best with minimum heat loss: All forced-air natural gas furnaces manufactured after January 1, 2010 must be ENERGY STAR® rated.

Look at the furnace’s Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating. Its a measure of how well the furnace (or boiler) converts fuel into heat An AFUE rating of 90 per cent means that 90 cents out of every dollar spent on fuel produces useful heat. Many heating systems may claim to be high-efficiency, but only those that are 90 to 97 per cent efficient receive the ENERGY STAR® rating.
